The little boy has his brother build him a paper boat that he can go play in the rain with, when he plays with the boat in the gutter, the water washes the paper boat down the drain, where the antagonist is introduced. The budget for the film It was $35 million, and worldwide it grossed a total of $700 million. It was nominated for MTV Movie Award for Best Villain, Empire Award for Best Horror, and MTV Movie Award for Most Frightened Performance.
